History of T. Bolton Sod Company

From a young boy, Terry Bolton always had a flair for business.  He could see the opportunity waiting to be had.  One paper route was not profitable enough – six or seven would be better.

In 1968, Terry graduated from Ryerson Polytechnic Institute with a Business Administration – Financial Management diploma.  He began working for AE Aimes on the Toronto Stock Exchange.  Terry began gathering experience and moved to the Ministry of Environment in 1970.  But Terry had the bug - he wanted to be self-employed.   Terry investigated several opportunities but finally decided on sodding and landscaping.

Terry Bolton - Founder of T. Bolton Sod CompanyTerry and his wife Ellowene, along with their young daughter Jennifer, moved to Palgrave, Ontario from Toronto in 1973.  It wasn’t until the spring of 1974 that Terry took the plunge.  He bought a pick-up truck, a sod roller and leased a Massey Ferguson Tractor.  Terry bought sod from Joe Dol and on June 24th, the birth day of Kimberley Anne, the company began its first sod job.

Terry was aggressive in his search for work for his new crew.  The company began to gain customers and loyalty.  Terry continued to buy sod from Joe Dol until 1989.  It was then that the first 100 acre farm was purchased. An additional 100 acres was leased.  Joe mentored Terry in sod production and was willing to provide knowledge and advice on issues affecting the crop.
